2025 International Student Workshop
Workshop Date: TBD
Application Deadline: TBD
Commit and Register to Attend Deadline: TBD
This workshop will be co-hosted by the ACSP Global Planning Education Committee (GPEC) and the Global Planning Educators Interest Group (GPEIG).
Objective and Contents
The first GPEC International Student Pre-Conference Workshop at the 2022 ACSP Annual Conference in Toronto explored ways for international students in North American planning schools to build self-advocacy and leadership skills and establish peer networks. In the process it was able to illuminate challenges experienced by them in planning departments/programs, specifically, and at universities more generally. The second edition of this workshop in Chicago, GPEC heard from students about how they viewed their curricula in terms of engaging with the global, their recommendations to make planning curricula more relevant to global challenges and explored how they experienced explicit, implicit biases/prejudices/ignorance in their classrooms and programs, and what might mitigate such impediments. This third edition of the workshop explores work models, globalized career pathways as well avenues for international students to craft successful careers. We will hear from public, private and non-profit employers and deliberate on skills, preparation, opportunities, networks and processes, and explore strategies that have promise, specifically various kinds of mentoring models.
Panelists will include representatives from the private sector, public sector, non-profit/multilateral sectors, consultants and ‘reflection from the trenches’ from recent graduates who have navigated the academic job market.
Workshop Participants
Both PhD- and Masters-level students in urban planning and closely related disciplines are encouraged to apply for this free workshop by filling out a short application form. The workshop will be limited to 25-30 students and priority will be given to students who register early. Students will be informed of acceptance.
