Strict “stay-at-home” orders to combat the COVID-19 pandemic have spurred a national reckoning around the value of shelter and the crisis of housing insecurity and affordability. The NYU Furman Center (led by NYU Wagner Planning professors Ingrid Gould Ellen and Kathy O’Regan) quickly responded to this new environment with a wide range of housing-focused resources and analyses to help policymakers and practitioners think through and navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. In an op-ed published in Shelterforce just four days after New York officially locked down, the Center’s Faculty Directors made the case for a forceful COVID-19 housing reponses. Concurrently, we posted a Policy Minute aggregating our own analysis with selected external resources related to Protecting Housing Stability during the COVID-19 Crisis. In early April, the Furman Center’s neighborhood level analysis of COVID-19 prevalence was featured exclusively on ABC News. The Center also posted analyses on housing insecurity in New York, the housing costs of New York City households most vulnerable to job layoffs, and the housing stock characteristics of households likely to feel the economic impact of the pandemic. To help localities turn this research and analysis into concrete action, the Furman Center published a microsite on Local Housing that provides resources and a framework for developing locally tailored COVID-19 Housing Response Plans.
