Global Climate Change and MOTIVE Project Highlights from ACSP Annual Conference

Under the leadership of Professors Ho Kim, dean of Graduate School of Public Health at Seoul National University (SNU), and Jiyoung Park, associate professor at the University at Buffalo and adjunct professor at SNU, four scholars introduced diverse planning fields related with climate change as part of the ACSP Annual Conference this past October in Buffalo, New York. These included:

• Land Use Adaptation Options, Ms. Eun Joo Yoon, SNU
Following these presentations, participants and audience members discussed the Model Of inTegrated Impact and Vulnerability Evaluation of climate change (MOTIVE) project. MOTIVE began in 2014 as a 7-year project (2014-2020) along with the ‘National Climate Change Adaptation Plan’ (NCCAP) every 5-year term in order to minimize potential damages from climate change, secure national safety and property, and moreover for opportunities in Korea. The main purpose of the project is to develop an integrated model to evaluate climate change impacts and vulnerabilities as well as advancing the science-based climate change adaptation measures in South Korea. Establishing and implementing the adaptation plan in a cost-effective and efficient way requires reliable scientific information to figure out the impacts and vulnerabilities stemming from various climate change issues scientifically and assess adaptation measures applied.
Aiming to develop and link models of various sectors including water management, agriculture, forest and ecosystem, MOTIVE will be a key model to support the climate change adaptation effort of South Korea. The main purpose of MOTIVE is similar to the modeling research around the world, such as the Climate Change Integrated Metrology for Cross-sectoral Adaptation and vulnerability in Europe (CLIMSAVE), Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES) of UK, and Integrated Climate Assessment–Risks, Uncertainty and Society (ICA-RUS) of Japan. MOTIVE has supported numerous scientific measures on climate change adaptation efforts in South Korea. Currently, MOTIVE has successfully constructed a quantitative model and moves toward developing a GUI-type user-friendly model in 2019.
Conference attendees spent time discussing the current stage of the MOTIVE project, as well as its’ future, considering what might be missing and what needs to actively added.
Another pre-organized session (3.41: CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENT MODELING), continued on this topic with additional participants and provided useful information on this project.
