The College of Environment and Design at The University of Georgia invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning in August 2011. The selected candidate will be expected to teach in the new graduate planning program, pursue scholarly and applied research, and provide public service and outreach.

The University of Georgia’s College of Environment and Design houses accredited five-year Bachelors Degree and three-year Masters Degree programs in Landscape Architecture as well as a Masters Degree in Historic Preservation.

The College is home to the oldest landscape architecture program in the south (1926), the largest in the U.S. and is consistently ranked among the country’s top five. In August 2009 the first class of graduate students entered the newly approved two-year Masters Degree program in Environmental Planning and Design that addresses the full range of urban regional and local planning, development and community issues. There is a large and diverse faculty involved with a wide range of research interests, practice and community service. Imbedded in an outstanding design school, the new Environmental Planning and Design program places a strong emphasis on physical and place-based planning focused on socio-cultural, economic, historic, political, ecological, and aesthetic influences. The close professional and academic relationships between Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation and Environmental Planning and Design also allow for shared coursework and teaching across the College’s degree programs.

The College seeks candidates with the ability to teach core courses in the new program and expertise in at least two of the following areas: Planning Policy and Law, Urban Sociology, Regional Infrastructure (i.e. transportation, water, green and energy), Environmental or Ecological Planning, as they relate to public policy, physical planning and design of the sustainable built environments.

Candidates for the position should have earned a PhD in Planning. In addition to the degree in the field, experience in the practice of planning and design and certification (AICP) or licensure in a related field is highly valued. A strong interest in teaching, research and public service and outreach is essential.

To apply, submit a letter of interest addressing areas of teaching and scholarly activity and / or creative work, curriculum vitae, and four references with names, addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers. Applicants with practice, creative, or scholarly experience should submit representative samples of their work. Those with teaching experience should submit samples of course syllabi, student work, and course evaluations.
