The Massachusetts Institute of Technology seeks a dynamic and academic leader to be the next Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning. The School comprises five main divisions: Department of Architecture; Department of Urban Studies and Planning; Media Lab; Center for Real Estate; Program in Art, Culture and Technology.
Reporting to the Provost, the Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School, overseeing a range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs and promoting excellence in all research, teaching and service activities across the School. The Dean oversees the management of the School’s fiscal operations, human resources, and physical facilities.
The Dean is expected to have a distinguished record of achievement―scholarly or professional―that would merit the rank of a Full Professor in one or more of the fields represented in the School. The Dean must possess the intellectual agility to understand and engage with areas of scholarship that lie beyond her or his own area of expertise. Candidates should have an outstanding record of academic leadership that demonstrates an ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of constituents and to foster diversity and inclusion among faculty, students and staff. The Dean must be able to work with other academic leaders in the School and the Institute to continue to attract and retain the best faculty while ensuring the highest standards for faculty promotion and tenure within the School. The Dean must be an articulate and effective spokesperson for the strategic agenda of the school both within MIT and outside of the Institute, and also must have the ability to identify and attract resources that help enable the School to fulfill its mission.
