The Department of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy (UPEP) in the Barbara-Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs (SPA) at Texas Southern University (TSU) invites applications for two full-time tenure-track positions (open rank) in Environmental Planning and Policy effective August 2014.

We seek candidates who are committed to excellent teaching, developing an externally funded research program, and play a leadership role in the department in the area of environmental planning. Areas of potential interest relating to environmental planning and policy could include: environmental health; urban environmental justice; health impact assessment; natural resources management and policy; environmental negotiation and community engagement; planning for water resources and water quality; climate change and energy policy; and land and habitat conservation. Research interests in areas of planning with people and communities of color would be an asset. Preference will be given to candidates with American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification.

Successful candidates must have the ability to teach an environmental planning course and contribute to the department’s emphasis on environmental justice. For one of the two positions, we value a candidate that has technical and teaching skills in environmental modeling and/or geospatial analysis (GIS). We prefer candidates who have demonstrated success in working with diverse student populations.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in urban planning, geography, or a closely related field by the time of appointment, and have an interest and commitment to urban research as well as professional planning practice.

TSU is a historically black college located in Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S. The city is home to one of the largest medical centers in the world, numerous global energy corporations, and a vibrant arts community.
