Job Description: Iowa State University has launched the Presidential High Impact Hires Initiative to support targeted faculty hiring in areas of strategic importance. As part of the initiative, the College of Design invites applications for a tenure-eligible position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 16, 2014.

The College of Design at Iowa State University is seeking a dynamic and accomplished colleague with a commitment to collaborative and interdisciplinary education and research to join the faculty as an assistant professor focusing on geographic information systems/geodesign. Departmental affiliation is open in the search process and will be assigned at the time of hire based on fit. The appointment is a 9-month position.

The College seeks an accomplished academic who will make significant contributions to teaching, creative scholarship, and outreach and actively participate as a member the GIS interdisciplinary collegiate team. The position will work with the team to teach courses and grow the GIS curriculum in the college (currently including a graduate GIS Certificate) eventually offering a new campus-wide undergraduate minor in GIS. Duties include developing new courses for the minor in the areas of spatial thinking and technologies including GeoDesign, and recruiting and marketing students into the program; developing a collaborative, interdisciplinary research/scholarship portfolio in GIS; developing and implementing an outreach program to work with external collaborators; and service to the program, college and university community.

Required Qualifications: PhD in geospatial discipline, or a terminal degree in a design-related discipline with heavy geospatial focus and a record that would warrant an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience and recognition in research, teaching, practice and/or outreach; demonstrated engagement with collaborative initiatives across multiple disciplines. Instructional experience is desired in on-line or distance- learning courses. The candidate should demonstrate competency in the use and application of GIS and geospatial technology to design problems, and have experience incorporating such content into undergraduate or graduate level instruction curricula. Candidates should show excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational and management experience including work with budgets and schedules, and possess technical capabilities especially related to GIS and geospatial technology.
