10-Month Assignment

Pay Information:
The salary range for this Assistant Professor level position is $4,592 – $6,188 per month. Note that all new
faculty hired by the SDCCD start at the Assistant Professor level. The highest monthly base starting salary
would be $6,188 with a PhD and six or more years of full-time teaching experience. Overload assignments
are paid at an hourly rate above this amount. Salary placement is based solely upon education and experience
as outlined in the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement, and it is non-negotiable. Annual Salaries
will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required
adjustment will be made on the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than
200 miles, one-way, will be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev
7/14/2011). Assistant Professors may earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
With promotions through Associate and Professor levels based upon mastery in the field, teaching of that
knowledge, a PhD or equivalent, successful evaluations and tenure track experience, the top range would be

Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Geography at San Diego Mesa
College for an assignment beginning Fall, 2014. Mesa College is located in the Kearny Mesa area of the city
of San Diego. This assignment may include day, evening and/or Saturday classes. In addition, this pool may
be used to fill identical vacancies that may occur during the academic year.

Major Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities are teaching courses in Cultural Geography and Physical Geography, as well as the
Physical Geography Lab course. Depending upon the qualifications and experience of the successful
candidate, and the needs of the department, other responsibilities may include teaching courses in Urban
Geography and/or World Regional Geography. The assignment will be 15 class hours per week. Additional
responsibilities of Mesa College faculty include maintaining regular office hours for student advisement,
serving on college and District committees, and participating in various departmental and college activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degrees must be from regionally accredited institutions
  • Master’s degree in Geography; or,
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography AND Master’s degree in Geology, History, Meteorology, or Oceanography; or,
  • The documented equivalent; or,
  • Possession of a California Community College Instructor Credential in Earth Sciences, including Geography, Geology, and Geophysics (valid for life).

  • Completion of graduate level coursework in Geography.
  • Ability to teach effectively by demonstrating a working knowledge of learning styles and teaching techniques.
  • Recent teaching experience in Geography at the lower-division college level.

  • Skills in interfacing with persons from diverse backgrounds who may have a wide variety of career and professional objectives.
  • Ability to originate and develop new topical courses in Geography.
  • Experience in the development and/or review of courses and curriculum.
  • Effective oral communication, writing ability.
  • Continued professional growth in Geography.
  • Computer literacy in a classroom setting.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.
