The Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) invites applications for a tenure-track position in urban design and related fields at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2014. The department seeks a well-trained scholar and capable teacher with an ambitious research agenda. A PhD in planning or in related fields is preferred. Candidates expecting imminent conferral of a PhD may apply.
We are especially interested in candidates with strong research interests in urban design and related fields and a desire to contribute to city and regional planning by advancing planning scholarship. Candidates should have the ability to teach site planning and urban/city design to masters students. These courses are usually taught as lecture courses rather than studio format. Ability and interest to collaborate with various faculty members in the department and the university is an asset. Successful candidates will also be able to mentor PhD students and teach courses at the doctoral level.
In addition to the professional master’s in city and regional planning (MCRP) and doctoral program, the department has dual degree programs and/or strong ties with graduate programs in environmental science, law, business, and public health at UNC-CH and with landscape architecture at North Carolina State University’s College of Design.
The department currently has over 120 full-time graduate students in the MCRP and doctoral programs as well as undergraduates pursuing a minor in Urban Studies and Planning. The 15 permanent faculty members are well known for their scholarship, research productivity, and extensive contributions to planning practice in variety of areas. Over its history, the department has established a distinguished tradition of training professional planners and developing future scholars. UNC-CH is an equal opportunity employer, and the department is strongly committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty. Women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply. For additional details about the department please see www.planning.unc.edu.
UNC CH is located in the research Triangle region of North Carolina, a fast growing and rapidly diversifying metropolitan region in the country with almost 2 million residents. The region is home to many leading public and private institutions including North Carolina State University, Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill respectively.
Applications will be reviewed on a continuing basis until the position is filled. The application should include a cover letter, statement of research interests, statement of teaching interests, CV, and a list of four references.
