Tenure-Track Position: Assistant Professor in Geographic Data Analytics at San Diego State University

The Department of Geography at San Diego State University (SDSU) is inviting applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of geographic data analytics, with exceptional candidates considered at Associate Professor rank. Suitable applicants for this position are engaged in the development of computation-intensive data analytics methods, with applications across the spectrum of geographic science, supported by practical expertise in cognate areas, such as geocomputation, ontology engineering, large databases, cloud computing, mobile GIS, or cognitive science. This position is rooted in SDSU's new research cluster initiative in the area of Human Dynamics in the Mobile Age (, which springs from the convergence of new developments in spatial science, mobile technology, social web, and big data. It aims to foster transdisciplinary research collaborations to understand dynamic patterns, relationships, narrative, and changes in human activities and behavior across space and time (e.g., health, migration, economic development, land use). The holder of this position will be eager to creatively engage with the heterogeneous data sources and analytical approaches of diverse disciplines, especially within the cluster of excellence. The person appointed will be expected to collaborate with faculty members in developing the cluster's research agenda and pursuing external funding opportunities existing in this area. Candidates must have strong communication skills and teaching interests that complement and strengthen current curricular offerings of the Department in the area of geographic information science, bringing to the classroom expertise in hands-on computer programming, data engineering, and analytics. Among the expectations is the development of a new undergraduate class in computer programming aimed at geography majors.
