The Urban Transportation Center (UTC) of the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA), University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites applications for the position of Research Transportation Planner/Analyst. With approximately $335 million in research, UIC shares with 73 other public and 35 private US universities the classification as Research University/Very High Research Activity by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
The Urban Transportation Center is dedicated to conducting research and providing education and technical assistance on transportation planning, policy, operations and management. The Center is a campus-wide initiative with affiliated faculty and students from Engineering, Management, Economics, and Public Administration. The Center specializes in three core clusters of research: disadvantaged populations and human sustainability; Intelligent Transportation Systems; and public transit, highway and freight planning, operations and management. We have worked with national, state, regional and local transportation and planning agencies, non-profits, private industry and other universities to address transportation issues. Our highly interdisciplinary center is composed of faculty, staff and research assistants with a funding level of approximately $1.7 million annually. Position. Under the direction of the Executive Director of the Urban Transportation Center (UTC) and other UTC research staff, the Research Transportation Planner/Analyst will assist with and initiate transportation research projects at the Urban Transportation Center to identify transportation problems, conduct research and analysis and develop transit strategy by using specialized transportation software, statistical and financial analysis, transportation demand modeling, Geographic Information Systems, preparing reports and publications, responding to RFPs, and securing funding for new research projects. He/she works closely with faculty, academic department administrators, and other professional staff in UTC and throughout the University.
Qualifications. Master’s degree in urban planning with a transportation specialization, geography, engineering, economics or related field. One year related experience preferred.
Working knowledge of funding and finance is required.
Knowledge of transportation finance and transportation planning or GIS or transportation demand modeling, or transportation software.
Strong computer skills and strong analytical skills required. Arc GIS suite of products, SPSS or equivalent statistical package and Adobe products suite.
Other relevant coursework/experience in the areas of planning and financial mechanisms to facilitate transportation infrastructure funding, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), transportation demand modeling, introductory programming, web programming and data mining as required.
Experience in project-based transportation research, field data collection and project final report writing is desirable.
Excellent oral and written communication skills including presentation skills are a must.
