Qualifications: Ph.D. at time of appointment (evidence of Ph.D. required at time of appointment) in urban studies, planning, or closely related field. The department seeks candidates with teaching and research expertise in Community Planning (focused on community development and transportation planning) beginning fall 2011. Candidates should have demonstrated excellence or potential for excellence in teaching, scholarly research, and professional and community service, as well as a commitment to university teaching in a multicultural environment serving a diverse student population. Professional planning experience, especially in community development or transportation, is highly desirable as well as a record of successful grant writing.
CSUN is a Learning Centered University. The successful candidate will be expected to join faculty and staff in a commitment to active learning, to the assessment of learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways that enable students to graduate. The university is actively developing a campus-wide sustainability agenda, including both curriculum and campus operations, and the successful candidate will be expected to participate in these initiatives.
At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.
Responsibilities:
Teaching is the primary job responsibility, but research, peer-reviewed publication, and community engagement are also expected. The successful candidate will teach a range of lower and upper division courses in urban studies and planning. These will include introductory level general education courses focusing on the evolution of urbanism and the structure of cities as well as advanced courses which could include -- the general plan and zoning, neighborhood planning, community development, transportation planning, a cognate course once a year in the Department of Geography, and other courses reflecting department needs and the candidate’s areas of professional expertise. Normal teaching load is 12 units per semester, although there are opportunities for reduction in teaching load for funded research. There will be a reduced teaching load during the first two years of appointment. Service to the department, college, and university is also a key job responsibility. The ability to successfully mentor and teach in a diverse student population is required.
