General Information:
San Diego State University, with an enrollment of 32,800 students is, one of the 23 campuses in the California State University System. San Diego State University is a major intellectual, cultural, and educational institution serving the greater San Diego area and in 2007, 2008 and 2009 was ranked the top small research university in the United States by the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index. The University offers bachelor degrees, in 81 areas, master degrees in 73 and the joint doctorate in 16. San Diego State University is located 25 miles from the United States/Mexico border and places an increasing international emphasis on preparing students for a global future.

Public Affairs:
The newly reconstituted School of Public Affairs within the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts contains three programs: public administration, criminal justice and city planning; each offer a master’s degree. Criminal justice and public administration also offer bachelor’s degrees with combined enrollment of over 1,200 students. The master’s degree in public administration is also offered with either a concentration in criminal justice or city planning. The School's MPA degree is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). The School of Public Affairs emphasizes excellence in teaching, research, and service to the community, the university, and the discipline.

Position Description and Responsibilities:

The School seeks a Director who is a visionary and innovative leader, recognized in the field for scholarly/creative achievements and administrative/managerial experience. The applicant must demonstrate a commitment to program development (including external funding), and willingness to advance the School’s community outreach and international/intercultural activities, as well as its commitment to diversity.

The Director provides effective leadership for the School across a wide range of management tasks, including: personnel procedures, program planning, curriculum development and budget; coordinates recruitment of tenure track faculty and hiring part time lecturers and staff; facilitates the reappointment, tenure, and promotion process; represents the School to the College, University, and professional community; promotes collaboration within and across departments and schools; provides integral involvement in the strategic planning and management of the College; maintains effective lines of communication among the faculty and staff; mentors faculty.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in public administration, criminal justice, city planning or a related field in public and urban affairs, with a scholarly record of teaching and research; experience as a department chair (or comparable administrative background) is also required; administrative and leadership skills related to personnel management, interpersonal communication, resource management, decision-making, and program development are essential. Experience in culturally diverse activities, university-community partnerships, interdisciplinary initiatives, and scholarly international pursuits is highly desirable.

Salary and Rank:

Faculty appointment at the rank of full professor. Salary negotiable.

Effective Date of Appointment: July 1, 2011
