San Diego State University, with an enrollment of 32,000 students is, one of the 23 campuses in the California State University System. San Diego State University is a major intellectual, cultural, and educational institution serving the greater San Diego area and in 2007, 2008 and 2009 was ranked the top small research university in the United States by the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index. Public Affairs:
The newly reconstituted School of Public Affairs within the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts contains three programs: public administration, criminal justice and city planning; each offer a master’s degree. Criminal justice and public administration also offer bachelor’s degrees with combined enrollment of over 1,200 students. The master’s degree in public administration is also offered with either a concentration in criminal justice or city planning. The School's MPA degree is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). The School of Public Affairs emphasizes excellence in teaching, research, and service to the community, the university, and the discipline.
Position Description (Urban Management/Criminal Justice Policy)
The School of Public Affairs is seeking a tenure-track faculty member at the assistant professor level for a Fall 2011 appointment in the areas of urban management and/or criminal justice policy. This position requires expertise to teach courses in at least one of the following areas: urban management, intergovernmental relations, urban organizations/environmental policy, law enforcement/criminal law, policing and society, and constitutional law. In addition to the substantive areas described above, it is highly desirable for successful candidates to have the ability to teach in one or more of the following areas: community/social justice, research methods, intergovernmental/border issues, criminal justice theory, community/organizational development, and urban policy. Some interest in developing online and distance courses is also desirable.
Successful candidates must be able to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Professional activities and publications in the applicant's area(s) of expertise are required for tenure and promotion.
Qualifications:
Applicants with a doctoral degree in public administration or a closely related field are preferred; candidates with ABD status will be considered but the doctoral degree must be completed before the effective date of appointment. Candidates should have demonstrated evidence of publications, and the potential for program development and grant writing ability, with clear leadership potential in each of these areas being an asset. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Application review will begin on October 15, 2010 and will continue until the position is filled.
