World Congress of Planning Schools Will Meet in Shanghai in July, 2001

Based on the highly successful experience of the joint ACSP-AESOP conferences in Oxford in 1991, and Toronto in 1996, four regional associations of planning schools are jointly organizing a World Planning Schools Congress.  The meeting is co-sponsored by ACSP and AESOP, along with the Asian Planning Schools Association (APSA) and the Australia-New Zealand Planning Schools Association (APSA).

The Congress will be held in Shanghai from July 11-15, 2001.  The local host is the Tongji University College of Architecture and Urban Planning.  The Congress will meet on the beautiful Tongji campus.  In addition to paper sessions, roundtables, and displays, the program will include mobile workshops in Shanghai and the surrounding area, as well as a variety of cultural events for participants and their guests.   The local hosts have also organized a number of post-Congress tours – both historical/cultural and planning focused.

The Chair of the Steering Committee for the Congress is Louis Albrechts from AESOP.  Other members are Anthony Yeh from APSA, Steve Hamnett from ANZAPS, and Mike Hibbard from ACSP.

The Congress is the first event of its kind – an opportunity for planning educators from around the globe to exchange research and pedagogical perspectives.  The general theme is Planning for Cities in the 21st Century:  Opportunities and Challenges.  The theme allows for papers on a wide variety of topics.  To help provide some conceptual structure, conference organizers have identified the following tracks:

The Role of Cities and Regions in Globalization
Public Participation, Urban Governance, and Public Policy
Housing and Community Development
Gender, Race, and Social exclusion
Telematics and Application of Information Technology in Planning
Sustainability of Urban and Regional Development
Planning Theory and History
Land Use, Transportation, and Growth Management
Urban design and Physical Form
Infrastructure Planning
Planning for Tourism and Recreation
Planning Education
Historic Cities and Urban Heritage
Planning for Developing Countries
Transnational Planning
Planning and Law
