The Current and Future Role of Universities in Community Planning and Development

 By Gene Bunnell

What different types of roles have universities played in the past related to Community Planning and Development?  What constructive roles could universities, and university-based schools of planning, conceivably play in the future?  Have universities with accredited degree granting programs in Urban Planning been as actively involved in community planning outreach efforts as universities which lack such programs?  Those are key questions being investigated by Gene Bunnell, Ph.D., AICP under the auspices of the Third Annual AICP Research Fellowship.

To assure that the views and insights of University-based planning educators are recorded and taken into account as part of this year-long research project, Dr. Bunnell invites faculty of ASCP-affiliated planning programs to communicate their thoughts, comments and insights directly to him.  Input would be particularly welcome related to:

A typology of University Involvements (ranging from a willingness to participate in joint and open planning processes, to playing a convening and/or leadership role, to providing planning and design assistance, to providing funding resources to support a jointly agreed upon course of action, to carrying out specific development initiatives aimed at benefiting host communities).

A strategic planning analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of different types of universities, in different community settings

State vs. private universities

Large vs. small universities/colleges

Religious vs. Non-sectarian institutions

Big city, medium-sized city, small city

Campuses clearly delineated from surrounding community, vs. campuses physically integrated into the fabric of the community.

Extent to which the University relies on private, off-campus housing to house students

Characterization of factors which prompted University involvement

Who precipitated and brought about the Involvement? (University President? individual faculty? combination? etc.)

Specific roles played by faculty of University Departments of Urban Planning
