Columbia University

Over the summer, the Urban Planning Program continued strengthening its relationship with other departments, programs and institutes within Columbia University.  In July and August the Urban Planning Program worked with Columbia University's Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory to explore the issue of Planning and Natural Hazards, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods.  The goal is to establish a vehicle for ongoing research and training of planners in this specialty.  Several possible avenues of collaboration were explored and a preliminary demonstration project is planned for January 2001.

The Urban Planning Program's Director, Elliott Sclar, along with Assistant Dean Nancy Degnan of the School of International and Public Affairs continue work on a new, Masters in Public Administration in Community Building.  This fall, they are beginning recruitment for the new program that will admit students for Fall 2001.   The Urban Planning Program also is in discussion with Columbia's Center for Environmental Research and Conservation, a program that provides continuing education to working professionals in non‑profit organizations, public education, and the environmental activist community.  The aim is to explore ways in which the Urban Planning Programs can help them introduce urban and regional planning education to non‑matriculated students.
