Planners for Climate Action: Launch at COP-23
Monday, November 6, 2017
ACSP planners: I am thrilled to tell you that on 11 November at the COP-23 UN climate meetings in Bonn, Planners for Climate Change will be launched as a stakeholder group under the Marrakesh Partnership for stakeholder involvement in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This will be part of Human Settlements Day at COP-23.
The formal launch, attended by UN-Habitat executive director Joan Clos, will feature two roundtable discussions: one involving representatives of professional planners organizations and a second involving representatives of planning school associations. The latter roundtable has been organized by GPEAN.
Also during COP-23 will be a closed-door session of planners' association and planning school association representatives with UN officials to lay out the working plans for the new stakeholder group. ACSP will be represented at this meeting by Michael Boswell of California Polytechnic, San Luis Obispo.
Planners absence from the Marrakesh Partnership has been conspicuous. This step forward will be important for our profession and our schools, and to the degree that we have substance to offer that others do not, for the global climate change process.
