Call for Applications: Summer Dissertation Proposal Workshop

May 21–27, 2017, Howard University, Washington, D.C.

Howard University’s Center on Race and Wealth and the Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin–Madison seek applications for the first annual Summer Dissertation Proposal Writing Workshop. This week-long workshop to be held at Howard University in Washington, D.C., is aimed at pre-proposal doctoral students in the social sciences from underrepresented populations who are studying topics related to poverty or inequality. The workshop is designed to help provide students the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to prepare a draft dissertation proposal.

The workshop will be led by faculty from Howard University and the Institute for Research on Poverty at UW–Madison. Topics will include:

  • Preparing a dissertation proposal
  • Writing a literature review
  • Overview of research methodologies
  • Quantitative methods
  • Qualitative methods
  • Data sources and retrieval
  • Participant presentations of draft dissertation proposals developed at the workshop

Applicants should submit a brief letter of interest describing their research aims and what they hope to learn from the workshop, and a letter of recommendation from their primary advisor. Applicants must be pre-proposal doctoral students from underrepresented populations (e.g., black, Hispanic, Native American) studying at U.S. universities.

Applications are due March 1, 2017. They should be submitted through the online application form.

Funding for travel, as well as meals and lodging (for students residing outside of the D.C. area) at Howard University, will be provided to 12 successful applicants.
