Beyond Cosmopolis

The year 2018 will mark 20 years since two of Leonie Sandercock’s seminal works, Towards Cosmopolis: Planning for Multicultural Cities and Making the Invisible Visible: a multicultural history of planning were first published. The intervening decades have only sharpened her critiques of the modernist project and further demonstrated the need for inclusive, empowerment-based planning. In 2018, students, former students, and colleagues of Leonie Sandercock will gather in Vancouver, BC to present papers on how her work has influenced their own approaches to planning, and what her career of published works and films suggests for the future of planning theory and practice.

This information session will be held on Saturday, November 5 from 10:30-11:30am and will provide details on the workshop, and release a call for papers for additional submissions. An edited volume will be published from the workshop proceedings. All are welcome to attend!

The Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning promotes education, research, service and outreach in the United States and throughout the world by seeking to:

  • improve and enhance the accreditation process, and;
  • strengthen the role of planning education in colleges and universities through publications, conferences, and community engagement;
  • extend planning beyond the classroom into the world of practice.
