ACSP Faculty Mentoring Program: Call for Mentors & Mentees 2016-17

The purpose of the ACSP Faculty Mentoring Program is to provide assistant and associate professors at ACSP-member planning schools with guidance and advice from respected senior planning faculty at other universities. Mentoring is meant to help faculty members develop goals and strategies for their research; to provide guidance in searching for research funding; to help evaluate and enhance the quality of faculty research, including papers, books, and funded research proposals; to provide guidance and suggestions in course development; to provide periodic progress reviews; to provide networking opportunities; and to offer advice on service, especially professional and community.

The ACSP Faculty Mentoring program is not meant to replace mentoring that takes place within a planning school or university. Such mentoring is especially valuable in assisting the faculty member in understanding the expectations for promotion and tenure at his or her own institution. Instead, by providing access to someone who is a national leader in the field or general area in which the mentee is working, the ACSP Faculty Mentoring program can facilitate interaction with a colleague who fully understands and can contribute to the research and teaching agenda of the faculty member seeking promotion and tenure.

Expectations & Responsibilities
Within the overall goals and objectives articulated above, the specific relationship between mentor and mentee will evolve depending on the degree of interaction. Some mentor-mentee relationships, for example, will focus on developing strategies for obtaining research funding, others will focus on providing critical reactions to articles and book manuscripts, while others may provide feedback on the nuances of research design. The exact content of the relationship, therefore, is left up to the mentor and the mentee.

Take a look at a brief Q&A based on responses to a survey conducted of current participants in the ACSP Faculty Mentoring Program. It describes experiences with a range of mentor-mentee relationships. The ACSP Faculty Mentoring Committee welcomes different styles and approaches. We do not feel that it is desirable to offer specific guidelines governing the mentoring program. It is up to each mentor-mentee pair to develop their own pattern of connecting.

Time Commitment: While regular interaction is desired, the relationship should not be burdensome on the mentor. The mentor and mentee should tell each other if too much or too little time is being spent on the relationship.

Mentor Qualifications: The first qualification is a genuine interest in mentoring junior faculty, and experience with the process of tenure and promotion. Faculty with strong records in research, teaching, and/or outreach are encouraged to apply, and will be matched with mentees for whom these qualities are important to promotion. Mentors should be tenured associate and full professors.

Matching of Mentors & Mentees: Mentors and mentees are matched on the basis of research, teaching, and service interests, as well as the preferences, if any, of mentees. Both mentors and mentees must approve the matches.


  • Both mentors and mentees should: 1) electronically submit a curriculum vitae and 2) complete the Online Application Form.
  • Applications should be submitted by December 15, 2016.
