About the Department of Geography and Planning: The Department has a Master’s Program (MRP) in Urban and Regional Planning, with over 50 students actively enrolled in courses.  The Program is fully accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board and has a strong record of studio projects, planning job placement and the ability to professionally liaise in the surrounding region.  In addition, the Department has undergraduate majors in Geography and Globalization Studies as well as an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree in Urban Studies and Planning, and a Master’s (MA) in Geography.  The Department also has undergraduate and graduate certificate programs in Geographic Information Sciences (GIS), a graduate certificate in Urban Policy, and a GIS track within the Ph.D. program in Information Science.  The Department is also in the process of establishing a new Master’s of Science in GIS.

The Urban & Environmental Policy Department at Occidental College invites applications for a senior scholar at the associate or full professor level. The position includes an appointment with tenure. The position will begin in the fall of 2015.

We invite candidates from a range of disciplines, including urban planning, economics, sociology, political science, environmental studies, geography, law, public health, and others. Candidates are expected to hold the Ph.D. degree or terminal degree in their field and have a significant track record of successful research, publication, grant-funded projects, and teaching.  We are also open to considering non-traditional candidates with extensive professional and community experience with demonstrated research and teaching but who may not have a Ph.D. or other terminal degree.

As an interdisciplinary department in an urban liberal arts college located in Los Angeles, we are interested in candidates who understand problems such as global climate change as deeply linked with increased inequality and how these stresses exacerbate existing social, economic, and political divisions. Policymakers at local, state, national and international levels face the challenge of developing policies that address existing inequities while simultaneously ensuring a long-term approach to the environmental and economic sustainability that has equity and democratic governance at its core. We want to attract a teacher-scholar who can help students understand the global aspects of our economic and environmental problems and also understand how addressing these problems involves practical solutions at the community, local, state, national, and global levels. At all these levels, the inter-related issues of jobs, community development, the built environment, and natural resources (water, oil, etc) come into play. Central to these concerns is how to create jobs that improve the standard of living without exacerbating environmental harm. “Green economy” and “green jobs” are the concepts typically used that seek to address these concerns. How to develop the built environment – including the location of jobs, housing, and transportation – that can reduce energy use and the negative impacts on the environment and public health are also connected to these concerns.

The ideal candidate will be one who can connect the global and the local and  expand our community-based learning and research opportunities for students through courses and conduct research related to the built environment, food systems, green jobs and sustainable development, poverty and labor issues, climate justice, and progressive regional and/or community economic development. We are particularly interested in senior candidates who can help us build our department’s focus on making cities more livable, democratic, and just.     

Our new colleague will be expected to teach four courses a year. We are open to our new colleague creating new courses as well as teaching (and revising) some of our existing courses, such as the intro-level Environment and Society (UEP 101), UEP 301 (Urban Policy and Politics), and our two-semester senior comps courses (UEP 410 and 411) in which students undertake a year-long applied research project, often with a community “client” or partner.  There are opportunities for team-teaching with faculty within our department and in other Occidental departments.  Although we expect our new colleague to develop his/her own courses, we are interested in candidates who can teach some combination of the following elective courses in our department:  Community Economic Development, Workforce and Employment Policy, Urban Political Economy, Poverty and Labor, Sustainable/Green Development, Food and Natural Resources, Urbanization and Natural Resources, Climate Adaptability and Resilient Cities, and the Built Environment and Urban Design.

Our new colleague will help further the college’s goals related to urban and community engagement. We pride ourselves on giving our students lots of opportunities for experiential learning and internships. Our department has helped lead efforts on campus, along with the Center for Community Based Learning, to link the college’s academic program with community involvement, including expanding community internships and community-oriented research projects for our students..  Our faculty and students also work with our applied research center, the Urban and Environmental Policy Institute (UEPI). UEPI has a staff of nine researchers and advocates who conduct social justice research and administer programs that advance its social change mission. It has become an institutional hub for many community engagement initiatives on campus, in Los Angeles, and nationally.

The successful candidate would join a strong department with four full-time faculty members as well as affiliated faculty in other departments and practitioners who serve as adjunct faculty who teach a variety of applied courses.  The UEP Department has approval to conduct another search, for a candidate at the assistant professor level, in 2015-2016 to begin teaching in Fall 2016. BACKGROUND: The Native American Institute (NAI) works with tribes, Native American organizations, and various Michigan State University units to enhance the sovereignty, cultural continuity, and well-being of tribes, Native American communities, and Native American people. Located in MSU’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, NAI undertakes outreach and engagement scholarship.  NAI works across units in the College and the University.  Of special note is NAI’s close working relationship with MSU Extension (MSUE).  NAI and MSUE jointly administer two tribally-focused MSU Extension programs. NAI is undergoing a reorganization of purpose, approach, and strategy to best assist Michigan’s Native American population.  The Director will provide leadership for this effort in concert with Native American communities and university stakeholders, thereby carrying NAI into its next phase of vibrant community engagement.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director will be responsible for all aspects of leading and managing NAI.  Specific responsibilities include:  managing NAI faculty and academic staff; coordinating program planning efforts in partnership with community members and the NAI Advisory Group; co-directing the Building Strong Sovereign Nations tribal governance training program undertaken collaboratively with MSU Extension and the Indigenous Law and Policy Center; co-directing the Michigan Federally-recognized Tribes Extension Program with MSU Extension; nurturing new scholarly initiatives tied to NAI’s outreach and research-oriented mission; generating external funding; and building productive collaborations across the university.  The Director will hire and conduct academic staff evaluations; manage NAI resources and its budget; promote program excellence; ensure program accountability; and network with a variety of related units and constituencies, on- and off-campus.

Fellowship Description: The NSF funded the Enabling Program, which has previously mentored three cohorts, is a demonstrably successful education and training effort aimed at developing junior faculty to become active scholars in both their individual disciplines and in the broader hazards and disaster research community. The aims of the program are to: (1) foster the development of scholars with a career-long commitment to research on hazards, risk, and disasters; (2) contribute to the nation's future research capacity and infrastructure in these areas; and (3) add important original scientific knowledge to areas of hazards, risk, and disasters.

Ten leading scholars will provide mentoring in hazards and disasters research for up to 20 competitively selected fellows. Representative activities include writing scholarly articles, book proposals and grant proposals. The felllowship covers travel expenses for program activities, including three required workshops, and offers a modest stipend.

Eligiblity: The fellowship is open to early career tenure-track faculty who have not yet received tenure and promotion at a U.S. institution and are interested in developing research in natural and human-made hazards, risks, and disasters in any relevant field of the natural and physical sciences, social and behavorial schiences, specialties in engineering, or interdisciplinary programs. We seek applications from faculty in academic departments with doctoral programs, as well as those in non-doctoral programs that have demonstrated a capability to prepare students for research careers. The School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is seeking an outstanding academic at the Advanced Assistant or Associate Professor level for a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Urban Systems and Sustainable Infrastructure Planning.   The successful candidate should demonstrate excellence in applied research in complex adaptive urban systems, infrastructure and smart city planning, and approaches to coping with climate change in urban areas.  Interest or research experience in the rapidly urbanizing countries in Asia would be especially welcome.  Demonstrated capacity for bridging the fields of engineering, applied social sciences, and the environmental/ecological sciences is sought.  The ideal candidate should also be able to address such planning issues as local governance, the regulation of public infrastructure, community engagement and public policy.  

Applicants must have a PhD in planning or related discipline in addition to several years of research and teaching experience, and a substantial track record of relevant research publications.  An undergraduate and/or graduate degree in engineering or one of the sciences is required in order to be eligible for eventual Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) funding.    SCARP ( ) is a fully accredited (Canada and USA) graduate planning program within the Faculty of Applied Science. The School’s explicit pedagogical mission is to advance the transition to sustainability through excellence in integrated policy and planning research, professional education, and community service. The Department of Geography at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment in Urban Social Geography at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, effective July 1, 2015.

The Department seeks to hire a candidate with a research and teaching program focused on urban social geography. Specific areas of interest in terms of research focus include geographies of immigration, health, or social inclusion/exclusion within metropolitan settings. Expertise in quantitative methods is considered an asset. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Geography or a closely related field by the date of appointment or soon thereafter and have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and research in urban social geography.

In addition to developing a strong research program and engaging in teaching at the University of Toronto, the successful candidate may have the opportunity to be involved with the research and teaching activities of the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP), a collaborative network involving New York University, the University of Toronto and other international universities and partners ( CUSP is a unique public-private research centre that focuses on research and developing technologies for the critical challenges facing the world’s cities.

The appointment will be at UTM, which has a strong interdisciplinary commitment to teaching and research, a multicultural student body of 12,000 students, and a modern, spacious campus, where the appointee will be expected to develop an externally funded research program. The successful candidate will also hold a graduate faculty appointment in the tri-campus Department of Geography and Program in Planning at the University of Toronto, a department with strengths and interdisciplinary linkages in physical and human geography and the environment. The Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) seeks outstanding faculty candidates for multiple positions. We are looking for individuals who can enhance our efforts to improve the quality of life in and resilience of the world’s urban regions through planning, design, and policymaking. We invite applications from individuals engaged in innovative research, teaching and practice, who can contribute to the department in one or more of the following areas:

Basic qualifications include a Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree in planning or a related field; a track record of excellence in scholarship and teaching; and a strong interest in working across traditional disciplinary boundaries to solve urban problems.  In rare cases, a record of outstanding practice will be considered in lieu of an appropriate degree or teaching/scholarship; MIT offers a parallel track for associate professor of the practice, which may be more appropriate for practitioner-scholar.
