The University of Akron. Assistant Professor. The Department of Geography and Planning invites applications for a full-time tenure track position in Geographic Information Systems/Geotechniques to begin August 2008. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and research, including experience that illustrates a strong ability to teach upper level courses in Geographic Information Systems, GIS Database Design, GIS Programming and Customization, Global Positioning Systems, and Spatial Statistics. The ability to apply these techniques in an area of human geography will be a plus. Interest and/or aptitude in community outreach or internships is also desirable. Candidates should be comfortable working across disciplines and teaching courses to students in both geography and planning and at both the masters and undergraduate levels. The successful candidate is expected to pursue an active program of scholarly research, publication, and external grant funding. Candidates with prior university level teaching experience and scholarly publications are especially encouraged to apply. A Ph.D. in geography or a closely allied discipline is required at time of appointment. The department has strengths in geographical and planning methodologies, cartography, remote sensing, and GIS, urban/regional planning, and human and regional geography. It offers a BA degree with emphases in geography and planning, a BS degree in geography/geographic information sciences, an MA in geography, an MS in geography/geographic information sciences, and an MA in geography/urban planning (http://www.uakron.edu/geography/). The department also has an active graduate internship program with local business, non-profits, and government agencies. The department has a well-equipped geotechniques teaching lab and computing facilities, which are maintained by a full time manager of GIS research.
