University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Department of Urban and Regional Planning

Associate and Assistant Professors

We are seeking two scholars to contribute courses in the Department’s two PAB-accredited programs, the Bachelor of Arts in Urban Planning and the Master of Urban Planning, to conduct research, and to supervise the research of students in the Ph.D. in Regional Planning program.  A Ph.D. in planning or terminal degree in a closely related field is required.  Planning practice experience and AICP membership are desirable.  The positions are full-time nine month tenure-track faculty appointments that begin August 16, 2008.  Salaries are commensurate with experience.  We will hire one position at the assistant professor level and a second at the assistant or associate level, using the following criteria:

(1) Assistant Professor.  The successful candidate(s) will demonstrate strong potential for exemplary scholarship and teaching in the field and will complement and enhance our areas of specialization.  We are particularly interested in candidates in the following areas:  environmental planning and sustainability, transportation, and/or urban design.

(2) Associate Professor.  The successful candidate will have an established record of teaching, research, and service sufficient to gain appointment as an associate professor with tenure.  The candidate shall conduct research and teach on issues central to the planning profession and have a commitment to the interdisciplinary aspects of planning.

Over its 94-year history, UIUC’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning has established an international reputation for training professional planners and developing future scholars.  The planning faculty is known for innovative inquiry in a diverse range of topics, including tools for plan-making and plan implementation, technology and planning support systems, land use modeling, community development through engagement, and regional economic development.  The Department currently has 16 permanent faculty members, 130 students in the BAUP program, 72 students in the MUP program, and 25 PhD students.

DURP faculty are involved in a broad array of ongoing research and public engagement projects, including the East St. Louis (IL) Action Research Project, the Expert Planning Information Systems Laboratory, the Land Use Evolution and Impact Assessment Model Laboratory, the Regional Economics Applications Laboratory, and the Regional Economics and Public Policy Research Group.  Curricular offerings in community development, geographic information systems and analysis, land use and transportation planning, local and regional economic development, and sustainable design link the department to key cross-campus initiatives.  The university (www.uiuc.edu) and departmental (www.urban.uiuc.edu) web sites offer further information.

Faculty in DURP are expected to demonstrate a strong record of scholarship and to maintain an ongoing research agenda in their field, as evidenced by peer reviewed publications.  Faculty also help to secure funding to support masters and doctoral student research assistants.   DURP faculty members have access to significant college and campus travel and seed research funding, and are expected to compete for external research funding.  The Department places a high value on professional applications, especially when they lead to scholarly publication.

DURP is strongly committed to increasing the presence of underrepresented groups in the planning profession and the academy.  Women, members of minority racial/ethnic groups and other designated classes are especially encouraged to apply.

All applicants must submit a letter describing their qualifications and interest, a complete curriculum vita, writing samples, and the names of three references.  In order to ensure full consideration, applications should be received by December 1, 2007.
