The University of California, Berkeley invites
applications, nominations, and self-nominations for the position of Dean of
the College of Environmental Design, appointment effective as early as July
1, 2008. The Dean, in consultation with the College Executive Committee, is
responsible for the leadership and administration of the College and reports
to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of the Berkeley campus.
The College of Environmental Design includes the
Departments of Architecture; City and Regional Planning; and Landscape
Architecture and Environmental Planning. Staff includes 60 full-time
faculty, 50 part-time instructors, and 45 non-academic staff. Students
include approximately 800 undergraduates, 300 graduate students in
professional majors, and 140 M.S./Ph.D. students. The University of
California, Berkeley provides a wealth of interdisciplinary resources and
exceptional opportunities that will afford the College of Environmental
Design a leading role in establishing new creative directions and expanded
visibility in design practice, scholarship, research, and teaching.
The new Dean will have the mandate to lead the College
in developing and realizing a unifying vision as well as fostering
interdisciplinary collaboration within and across the diverse professional
and scholarly communities of the College and other University departments
and programs. The Dean's responsibilities also include administration of
academic personnel and staff; control and direction of teaching and
operations budgets; and oversight of physical facilities, instructional
technology, research and teaching programs, public relations, fund raising,
community outreach, and diversity initiatives.
We seek a candidate with a professional degree and/or a
Ph.D. who has a record of national and international distinction in one or
more of the disciplines of the College, as well as accomplishment in
teaching, design practice, and/or research that would warrant appointment at
Full Professor. Candidates must bring a passionate commitment to
intellectual, creative, and professional excellence, along with a dedication
to the special opportunities and responsibilities of a public university,
including an ability to lead interdisciplinary undergraduate, professional,
Master of Science, and Ph.D. programs. The ideal candidate should be
conversant in the breadth of current scholarship, research, design practice,
and education conducted in all departments of the College. The candidate
must have the ability to work with department chairs to attract and retain
new faculty of the highest caliber and foster collaboration among the
faculty, staff, and students. Demonstrated academic and administrative
accomplishment, including a clear record of fair, collegial, and efficient
governance and management, and a strong commitment for promoting diversity
and inclusion are indispensable for this position. Finally, it is essential
that the candidate have the capacity to raise funds from extramural sources
in support of a coherent vision and mission for the College.

vitae, and a list of at least three references—by March 1, 2008.
