The Department of Urban
Studies and Planning is seeking an individual to fill a full-time dual
position of Lecturer and Research Scientist to initiate research and teach
several graduate and/or undergraduate subjects each year. This is a five
year, renewable, non-tenure-track position. A senior candidate could
possibly be considered for a position at the Senior Lecturer/Principal
Research Scientist level.
The Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) is
located within the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT. The
department has a large masters program in City Planning that offers an
Environmental Policy and Planning Specialization as well as environmental
policy and planning specializations at the doctoral and undergraduate
levels. DUSP also offers a two-year Certificate in Environmental Planning
open to students registered in one of the DUSP degree programs.
Requirements for the position include: a
graduate degree in environmental planning or a related field. Practice and
research experience are essential along with the background required to
offer a client-based urban-oriented environmental practicum of interest to
students preparing for professional careers in environmental planning. Past
success in raising sustained research funding is imperative. Experience in
domestic or international settings and a PhD, are preferred but not
required. The successful candidate will have both a scholarly and an
applied orientation toward environmental policy and planning as demonstrated
by sustained research and practice for at least 5 – 7 years beyond graduate
study. He or she will be well-grounded in the theory and practice of
sustainable development in an urban context with an interest in one or more
of the following topics: alternative energy, climate change mitigation,
green technology innovation, urban pollution prevention, natural resource
conservation, or urban environmental health.
The person selected will teach exclusively in the
Environmental Policy and Planning section of the DUSP, but will be expected
to work with faculty members in the engineering, architecture, science and
humanities schools and departments at MIT. The successful candidate will be
able to communicate and work with students from numerous disciplinary and
cultural backgrounds.
