Department of Urban Studies and Planning

Lecturer and Research Scientist

The Department of Urban Studies and Planning is seeking an individual to fill a full-time dual position of Lecturer and Research Scientist to initiate research and teach several graduate and/or undergraduate subjects each year.  This is a five year, renewable, non-tenure-track position. A senior candidate could possibly be considered for a position at the Senior Lecturer/Principal Research Scientist level.

The Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) is located within the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT.  The department has a large masters program in City Planning that offers an Environmental Policy and Planning Specialization as well as environmental policy and planning specializations at the doctoral and undergraduate levels.  DUSP also offers a two-year Certificate in Environmental Planning open to students registered in one of the DUSP degree programs.

Requirements for the position include: a graduate degree in environmental planning or a related field. Practice and research experience are essential along with the background required to offer a client-based urban-oriented environmental practicum of interest to students preparing for professional careers in environmental planning.  Past success in raising sustained research funding is imperative. Experience in domestic or international settings and a PhD, are preferred but not required.  The successful candidate will have both a scholarly and an applied orientation toward environmental policy and planning as demonstrated by sustained research and practice for at least 5 – 7 years beyond graduate study. He or she will be well-grounded in the theory and practice of sustainable development in an urban context with an interest in one or more of the following topics: alternative energy, climate change mitigation, green technology innovation, urban pollution prevention, natural resource conservation, or urban environmental health.

The person selected will teach exclusively in the Environmental Policy and Planning section of the DUSP, but will be expected to work with faculty members in the engineering, architecture, science and humanities schools and departments at MIT.  The successful candidate will be able to communicate and work with students from numerous disciplinary and cultural backgrounds.

Applicants must send: 1) a letter describing practice, research and teaching interests; 2) a curriculum vita, 3) indication of a track record of research funding; 4) samples of published scholarly work; and/or the products of applied policy analysis or consulting; and 5) contact information for three references (please provide name, title, address, telephone number, and e-mail) to Xenia Kumph, MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning, Room 9-312, 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02139.  For more information contact: Prof. Lawrence Susskind, Search Chair, (617) 253-2026, susskind@mit.edu.

Review of applications will begin on November 6, 2007 and continue until the position is filled.  The appointment is intended to begin in the Fall of 2008.

MIT is building a culturally diverse faculty and strongly encourages applications from women and minority candidates.  MIT is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
