Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

The Department of Geography and Geology invites applications for a
tenure-track Historic Preservation Specialist at the Assistant Professor
rank. This is a full-time position in the Graduate Historic Preservation
Program, and would begin September, 2008. The preferred candidate will
hold a Ph.D. (or be ABD) in Historic Preservation, American Studies,
Architecture, Preservation-Planning, Public History, or a related field.
Applicant should show demonstrated experience or potential in teaching,
research, publications, grants, and program administration. Founded in
1979, EMUšs Historic Preservation Program is one of the largest preservation
programs in the nation with an average of between 80 to 90 graduate students
per year. It is Certified by the National Council for Preservation
Education. It offers concentrations in Preservation Planning; Heritage
Interpretation, Tourism, and Administration; General Preservation Studies;
as well as a Graduate Certificate and Undergraduate Minor. Candidates
are expected to be able to teach a majority of the following courses:
Introduction to Historic Preservation, Introduction to Historic
Administration, Problems in Architectural Interpretation, Principles of
Building Technology, Architectural Nomenclature, American Vernacular and
Historic Architecture, and Funding Preservation Projects. Additional courses
may include a selection of the following: Cultural Landscape Interpretation,
Rural Planning and Preservation, Preservation Research Techniques,
Documenting Historic Places, International Preservation, Field Methods
(Field School), and Neighborhood Preservation. Interest in developing
courses in preservation technology and sustainability and downtown
revitalization would be a plus. Student advising also is expected. EMU
enrolls approximately 23,000 students and offers a strong benefits package
and collegial work environment. Faculty have access to research assistance
and institutional support. The EMU campus is located in historic Ypsilanti,
and is five miles from Ann Arbor and 35 miles west of Detroit, MI and
