Assistant/Associate Professor
The School of Planning at Dalhousie University invites
applications for a probationary tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor
position, starting in July 2008.
Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia is one of Canada's top,
comprehensive research and teaching universities. The School is located in
the heart of the east coast's largest city. Halifax enjoys an unsurpassed
natural setting on the Atlantic coast. It is the academic, cultural and
economic center of Atlantic Canada.
The School of Planning is one of two constituent schools in the Faculty of
Architecture and Planning. The School has a current enrollment of about 50
graduate students and 120 undergraduates. It offers professionally
accredited planning degrees at both levels (Bachelor of Community Design
honors and Master of Planning) and an undergraduate degree in community
design. The School of Planning seeks to advance the academic discipline and
the profession of planning through teaching, research and community service.
We see planning as a broad and collaborative enterprise which brings
together diverse interests to create rich and vibrant communities. For us,
the essential ingredients of planning are land and environmental concerns,
people and social context, and settlement as reflected in built form.
The School is looking for a new faculty member at the Assistant or Associate
professor level. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core and
elective courses, advance the discipline through focused research and
practice, as well as actively engaging in administrative functions which
will shape the School's future. In particular, we expect the new appointment
to make a contribution to environment, design and spatial aspects of the
program. Familiarity with graphic and spatial technologies is desirable.
We are looking for someone with a professional degree in planning with an
established record of scholarship and accomplishment, preferably with a PhD.
The successful candidate will have clearly articulated and focused research
and career plans. We expect the person in this position to be a team player;
to have demonstrated leadership in mobilizing others to collective action;
to have brought innovative ideas and new perspectives to the field and the
profession; and, to have a record of achievement in the discipline. A record
of successful teaching experience is desirable. In keeping with the School's
present strengths and directions, community-based practice or research is
essential.
