Meet Mitchell Lloyd. Mitchell is a Master’s degree graduate of the Department of Urban and Planning at Jackson State University and also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering Technology from the University of Southern Mississippi. Currently, Mitchell is a Transportation Planner and the Title VI Coordinator for the Memphis Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization in Memphis, Tennessee.
“Urban Planning provides me the opportunity to balance my creativity and desire to make a powerful impact on the community,” shares Mitchell when asked about his chosen profession. “I aspire to work in my community interacting with residents while developing new and innovative approaches to achieve collective goals. I want to use my talents to enhance my community to usher in a brighter future.”
When asked about his planning education, Mitchell had this to say, “One professor that really made a lasting impression on me was Dr. Mukesh Kumar. His outrageous ability to speak and facilitate unexpected discussions on any topic was truly memorable. His incredible theory of the LeBron James Effect on leaving Cleveland was amazing and definitely my all-time favorite.”
In the future, Mitchell desires to push forth with a career of increased responsibility while accumulating the knowledge base necessary to become a well-rounded professional.
“It is very important to be a voice for positive efforts in the profession, especially those sensitive to young people and people of color,” adds Mitchell. “The best advice I could give students is to take learning outside of the classroom to become exposed to the many specialties of the planning profession.”
Mitchell stresses the importance of cultivating professional relationships as they may blossom into opportunity.
“From transportation to school planning, graduate school typically only covers the surface level of these different specialties,” shared Mitchell. “I challenge current students to look outside of traditional planning roles and be aware of opportunities in nontraditional planning industries that interest them.”
